LACK OF UNDERSTANDING OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CAUSES MENTAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH PROBLEMS THAT ARE INCREASINGLY WORRYING
Mental and
psychological health is becoming more of a concern in this post-independence
era, particularly among young people and teenagers. Why is religious knowledge
important in today's life, and how does it relate to mental and psychological
health? Understanding a problem from a religious perspective will undoubtedly
lead to a solution that is preferable to facing the problem by covering it with
other problems. Based on an article published in the Advances in Social Science,
Education and Humanities Research, volume 339, 1st
Annual Internatioal Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities (AICOSH 2019) ,
the journal of AQIDAH (Religious Belief) and Mental Health
by Zidni
Immawan Muslimin.
If
you look at today's society, there is less exposure to religion, especially
among young people who are easily influenced by western culture, where the
society only places God as the creator and believes in his existence; however,
those in the west do not believe that everything happens according to God's will
and deny that their lives are determined by destiny, in fact, there are those
who live their lives without feeling the existence of God as the creator of
everything. There is no need to leave the country or immigrate there because,
in this day and age, they can apply a culture that is harmful to the younger
generation, particularly Muslims, by simply showing videos on social media
until the young people make it as necessary trends follow. Without religion and
proper education, the mental and psychological effects of this culture will
become more worrying, causing symptoms such as suicide cases, killing one's own
family members, feeling and emotional pressure, identity confusion problems
that lead to gender change, child abuse, among other things, contributes to
serious and high crime rates in Malaysian society, particularly among Muslims.
The most dangerous weapon in human life is not
the sharpest, but the most dangerous weapon is in the human being, namely
"THE MIND". The human mind is the most dangerous thing because it can
create various reactions, problems, and actions in addition to thinking and
finding solutions. If the negative mind dominates the entire mind then all the
body parts will work together in our actions and from there is the existence of
the evil side of humans which is dangerous. As a result of that dark side then
humans are born who act cruelly like killing fellow human beings even though
they are basically invisible but the thoughts that negativity will dominate
their souls if they are allowed to. Therefore, the greatest power to form a
good character must come from a positive mind. A person who practices Islamic
in daily life will have better health and a more positive mind. When confronted
with a problem, he will be more sensitive to finding a solution to the cause of
the problem rather than looking for someone to blame. Mental and psychological
health is not measured by lifestyle or even income; even today, people with
good jobs and salaries suffer from it, particularly those who have suffered
from problems such as physical and mental abuse as children, trauma, bullying,
and problems from family history; this condition contributes to mental health. Dr.
Wan Azizah, stated at the World Mental Health Day seminar in October 2018 that
40 percent of Malaysians suffer from mental illness. The percentage increased
further when the Movement Control Order went into effect due to the Covid 19
Pandemic for two years, which increased significantly. Mental disorders affect
over 450 million people worldwide. According to the World Health Organization
(WHO), one out of every four people will suffer from a mental illness at some
point in their lives.
Mental health problems
affect one in every three Malaysians, with the highest prevalence among
low-income individuals and those aged 16 to 19. According to the Ministry of
Health's (MOH) 2015 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS), people aged 16
and up are 29.2 percent more likely to experience mental health problems during
the pandemic. According to an article published in ASEAN Today in March 2021,
Malaysia is experiencing an increase in mental health issues, which the
presence of COVID-19 may exacerbate. He identifies social isolation, financial
uncertainty, and loss of loved ones as the primary causes of anxiety, stress,
and depression.
Furthermore, 78 suicide
attempts were made in Malaysia between March 18 and June 9, 2020, during the
initial lockdown period. This represents a significant increase over the
previous year's 64 suicides that were not caused by COVID. The solution used as
a reference after a study by research experts who are experts in this problem
discovered that the situation that occurred to the Muslim community has mental
and psychological problems because they do not perform the prayer, which is a
pillar of religion for Muslims, and do not practice the practices applied in
Islam through Al-Quran and Al-Hadith. As the word of God in Q.S. Yunus : 57 and
Q.S. Al-Isra': 82. Meaning: "O man, indeed the Qur'an comes from your Lord
that contains lessons, cures for inner diseases, guidance and mercy for those
who believe." (Quran Yunus: 57)."And We sent down the Qur'an which is
a cure and a mercy for those who believe." (Q.S Isra':82).The
introduction of Islamic knowledge should be emphasized more than just studying
for knowledge in school, but the role of Islam in life should be absorbed in
order to become a strong hold, not just knowing general knowledge but becoming
an obligation to practice so that the next generation is born in a healthy,
productive, and more positive environment.
According to the
article, religion plays an important role because all Muslims should be
confident that through prayer, they can prevent themselves from doing evil
things and be confident in the best way to solve problems by returning to the
creator. One of the branches of not observing prayer and difficult to control
lust is religious links in mental problems. A person's good mental health is
defined as the absence of complaints and mental disorders such as neurosis and
psychosis (adjustment to the social environment). Preventing mental disorders
and diseases is what mental health is all about. A healthy mind will not be
easily disturbed by stress (Causes of stress). People with a healthy mind can
withstand stress from themselves and their surroundings.
The main fact about
mental health is that statistics must be stopped from increasing because
raising a positive generation and combating mental problems that can lead to
crime rates is a shared responsibility with strong religious beliefs that can
have a significant impact on human life, including health. A mentally healthy
person will always feel safe and happy in any situation; he will also reflect
on everything he does in order to control and control himself. The best way to
overcome mental health problems is to practice religious values in everyday
life. A person's mental health can be defined by their ability to adapt to
their environment, to develop the potential found in themselves as much as
possible to achieve Allah SWT's pleasure, and to develop all aspects of
intelligence, including spiritual health, emotional intelligence, and
intellectual intelligence. Religion is a psychological illusion. Humans turn to
religion when they feel helpless in the face of disaster. As a result, all
forms of religious behavior are human behaviors that stem from the desire to
avoid danger and can provide a sense of security. So, why does Islam need to be
a reference in mental health? The first benefit is nutrition, because 99
percent of diseases originate in the stomach. Thus, good nutrition can provide
good nutrition for the body and mind, for example, practicing nutrition such as
honey, fruits, vegetables, and reducing fast food reduces the symptoms of
obesity, which is also a contributor to mental problems in today's society, as
well as practicing the culture of eating with the method of eating in the
morning like a king, lunch like a normal person, and evening like a poor man
because it has the ability to control the body's balance. Furthermore, he
conducts therapy with reflexology experts without using modern medications,
i.e. (drugs).
The article chosen is
the relevance and view of mental health and psychology from a religious perspective
because, after disentangling mental problems and the existence of various
diseases such as psychopath, bipolar, stress, identity disorder, and partly
refers to a person lacking in religion, that is, not placing religion as the
foundation of life and not placing all hopes and destiny of life are from the
Almighty. It is well known that the human mind is easily influenced by a
person's words, actions, or life experience, but from a religious standpoint,
if it is modelled on the qualities of the past, why does this mental health
problem not exist because people are now too easily influenced and there is no
life support. In addition, In other words, there is no direction in life as a
Muslim we must be certain that there will be a day of retribution for everything
we do and that the afterlife exists after the destruction of the world because
it is one of the pillars of faith but some human attitudes that love and love
the world cause the creation of human nature itself which always wants all
wishes to be achieved until it forgets that this world is a place to be tested
and not a place to have enjoyment.
The main concern of the
linked article is the problem of removing religion from everyday life, as well
as the topic chosen not understanding the importance of religion, which causes
mental and psychological problems such as psychopaths, (SPD), identity
confusion, and mental problems to increase. According to the study of mental
illnesses, everyone has this disease. For example, when there is an accident,
we will be busy wanting to know the condition of the victim our subconscious
mind will feel disappointed if no one is injured or someone dies only then do
we feel sympathy. Mental health researchers in California studied 4% of (SPD)
exists in each person and the average rate has increased by 6% until now, when
compassion is decreasing in individuals then there are humans who act cruelly
to get pleasure from the crying of others . Furthermore, the topic was chosen
where a lack of understanding religion causes mental health problems and
psychological diseases to arise because people who apply religious knowledge
from childhood and understand it well will have a more positive life than those
who do not learn to understand religion. For example, Islam affirms that the
best foods have high nutritional value, such as honey, olives, and dates, but
we are more complacent with fast food and diversify the ingredients to the
point where we lose the real nutrients. Furthermore, Islam explains that food
should be chewed well and properly, but we are stuck with trends like (Mukbang,
ASMR, viral food, and Foodie) where their way of eating is a bit messy, just
swallowing and eating large quantities. Because 99 % of diseases originate
in the stomach, this is one of the causes of mental health problems caused by
unhealthy eating and practices that are unsafe for the body.
The author Abdul Hamid
dissects the problems of RELIGION AND MENTAL HEALTH IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF
RELIGIOUS PSYCHOLOGY, demonstrating that religion is very important in life,
but my personal opinion is that it does not highlight the nutrition and health
care aspects, instead giving views based on various religious psychology, which
means that it does not study in depth the goodness of religion Islam in life,
which includes mental and psychological health.
Finally, religion is
one example of how religion can help people become more civilised and behave
better. Without religion, people quickly lose their sense of direction and
purpose in life. Religion is a solid foundation that is guided by sound
teachings. Human traits that are easily influenced and influenced can result in
a variety of mental illnesses. As a result, good mental health begins with good
thinking and nutrition, and it begins with ourselves. Humans cannot change
their fate, but we can try to improve things.
